Hysterical Map of the Jackson Hole Country and Grand Teton National Park, 1948
Just the name alone is enough to make you smile!
If you’re looking for a colourful, nostalgic escape then these framed reproduction prints are the answer. They look amazing grouped together too…a never-ending journey.
Mention “Hysterical Map” and most aficionados and collectors of early 20th century pictorial maps will invariably think of Lindgren Bros of Spokane, Washington, USA, who became synonymous with this light-hearted and amusing style of pictorial cartography in the period between 1933 and 1935.
Their distinctive designs, refined over the years created a series of over three dozen entertaining souvenir maps of National Parks and popular recreational areas of the American West and Pacific Northwest.
They are easily recognisable to the modern collector, typified by the vibrant yellow body colours, red roads and highways, innumerable pictorial vignettes and amusing quips and jokes. The surrounding narrow blue border (that was also occasionally printed in red) which beautifully frames each map, also incorporates amusing text along each side.
With the cock’eyed inaccuracies, guaranteed smileage, and easy affordability the maps offered an immediate appeal to the newly mobile, middle-class, automobile driving tourist, increasingly eager to explore the natural wonders and out door beauty of the American West. Usually offered for $.25 with an accompanying envelope, they could be sent to friends, colleagues and relatives as a small token gift or retained by the buyer and kept as souvenirs of their cherished vacation times.

All prints are hand framed on site in our workshop.
