Mention “Hysterical Map” and most aficionados and collectors of early 20th century pictorial maps will invariably think of Lindgren Bros of Spokane, Washington, USA, who became synonymous with this light-hearted and amusing style of pictorial cartography in the period between 1933 and 1935.
This is a rare early Lindgren Brothers pictorial map prepared for the 1934 American Legion State Convention in Washington, which was sponsored by Bohemian Breweries of Spokane.
This particular version is a printers proof which has been printed on brown card rather than yellow paper.
The map records each of the American Legion Posts in Washington by name and is full of humor, puns and comic vignettes related to the State. The present map is different from other Lindgren Brothers maps that are commonly printed on yellow card. For a start, the word "Hysterical" is not in the primary title and second, there are clear sponsors for the map, the American Legion and Bohemian Breweries of Spokane. This map also bears no copyright and may have been a volunteer production, done by the brothers because of their affiliation with the American Legion.
With the cock’eyed inaccuracies, guaranteed smileage, and easy affordability the maps offered an immediate appeal to the newly mobile, middle-class, automobile driving tourist, increasingly eager to explore the natural wonders and out door beauty of the American West.
